Picture: Oats (Avena sativa) at the stage where the seed heads are full but are yet to start drying. This Eurasian grass that is one of the major cereal crops. Although the grain was a staple food in the Middle Ages, for many years oats were primarily used as a fodder crop, principally for horses, but with the rise in the consumption of breakfast cereal and mixed grain breads they are once again widely used.
