Picture: Dahlia coccinea, one of the principal parents of the garden dahlias, this species can grow to as much as 3m tall and is found from Mexico to Guatemala. Although usually a bright orange-red, the ray florets may be any shade from yellow to deep maroon and the foliage may show purple tints.
