Picture: Malus sylvestris var. domestica (syn. Malus x domestica) 'Red Delicious', an old variety that is still popular due the appeal of its wonderful skin colour, even though it can quickly become mushy in storage. It originated in Iowa in 1880 and is the most widely recognised red apple in the United States. Modern commercially grown 'Red Delicious' last better in storage but lack the flavour of the original form.
