The winter foliage and developing flower buds of Rhododendron degronianum, a relatively low, spreading, evergreen shrub native to Japan. With great age it can reach 2.5m tall, but is usually under 1.5m. It flowers very late and is notable for its lush, thick leaves, which have dense indumentum on the undersides. The popular Rhododendron yakushimanum is widely regarded as a subspecies of this species.
