Stock Photo: Galanthus plicatus Image ID CFGc858

Picture: Snowdrop (Galanthus plicatus), this bulb from eastern Europe is particularly early-flowering and is often in bloom by a month after the winter solstice. It naturalises well in cultivation and soon forms small clumps. It differs from Galanthus nivalis mainly in details of the unfurled foliage, its more distinctly blue-green leaf colour and small chevron-like green spot on each inner petal rather than a green patch, though there are also intermediate hybrids.
