Stock Photo: Lake Coleridge Image ID CFGb869

Picture: Lake Coleridge is a large inland lake in the Canterbury foothills of the Southern Alps. Although near the Rakaia River, the river is 140m below the lake level and does not run into it, nor is it directly fed by the lake. Because of this height difference water is taken from the lake and allowed to flow downhill through large pipes to the turbines of the power station (built in 1915) at Lake Coleridge village; it is then directed into the Rakaia. Lake Coleridge — 17.5km long, 4.5km wide and over 200m deep — is surrounded by high country farms and is a popular fishing, boating and camping area.
